Dolný Kubín je okresným mestom a administratívnym centrom regiónu, sídlo tu má viacero verejných inštitúcií, ktoré zabezpečujú výkon štátnej správy v ich pôsobnosti. Mesto je súčasťou Euroregiónu Tatry, aktívne sa podieľa na rôznych aktivitách v rámci cezhraničnej spolupráce. Žije v ňom takmer 18 000 obyvateľov.
