Vznik hradu, ktorý je dnes známy ako Topoľčiansky hrad, sa spája so šľachtickým rodom Čákovcov, ktorý sa stal okolo roku 1260 vlastníkom panstva Topoľčany. S darovaním  majetkov boli spojené aj povinnosti, ku ktorým patrila aj výstavba hradov slúžiacich na ochranu kráľovstva. Z veže, na ktorú je možné vystúpiť aj dnes, je prekrásny výhľad do údolia rieky Nitry, na hrebene Tríbeča a Vtáčnika, ako aj Považského Inovca.

Vznik hradu, ktorý je dnes známy ako Topoľčiansky hrad, sa spája so šľachtickým rodom Čákovcov, ktorý sa stal okolo roku 1260 vlastníkom panstva Topoľčany. S darovaním  majetkov boli spojené aj povinnosti, ku ktorým patrila aj výstavba hradov slúžiacich na ochranu kráľovstva.

Keďže panstvo Topoľčany bolo situované v údolí rieky Nitra, vhodné miesto na výstavbu hradu ako strediska panstva a súčasne ako opevneného bodu sa našlo na jeho okraji. Tým miestom bola vápencovo-dolomitové bralo nad osadou Hrnovce, z ktorej sa neskôr vyvinula obec Podhradie. Dôležitým faktorom pri výbere miesta bola aj skutočnosť, že z tohto brala bol dobrý výhľad do údolia rieky Nitry a vizuálne spojenie s Uhrovským hradom, hradom na Michalovom vrchu pri Klížskom Hradišti, so samotnými Topoľčanmi a taktiež s hradom Gýmeš v pohorí Tríbeč.

Najstaršou ranogotickou časťou Topoľčianskeho hradu horný hrad, ktorý tvorila obytná, hranolová veža (vonkajšie rozmery 9×9 m) a obvodový múr: Ten vymedzoval areál v tvare nepravidelného polkruhu, 54 m dlhý a 33 m široký. Veža pritom stála na najvyššom mieste na okraji skalnej steny a bola vstavaná do obvodovej hradby. Okolo obvodového múru bola z vonkajšej strany mohutná priekopa, ktorá bola zahĺbená do skaly. Jej zvyšky sú ešte aj dnes viditeľné západne a východne od obvodového múru. Táto najstaršia stavebná fáza sa datuje do 3. tretiny 13. storočia a jej iniciátorom mohol byť otec Matúša Čáka Trenčianskeho Peter.

Roku 1321, po smrti Matúša Čáka, sa hrad dostal do vlastníctva kráľa. Niekedy v 1. polovici 14. storočia zdokonalili vonkajšie opevnenie hradu o tzv. parkanovú hradbu, ktorá okrem iného chránila aj prístupovú cestu na hrad. Predpokladá sa, že v tom čase bola postavená aj prvá hradná kaplnka, kde sa slúžili bohoslužby aj pre obyvateľov obce Podhradie.
 

Od roku 1389 patril hrad Séchényiovcom, v rokoch 1434-34 ho obsadila a držala husitská posádka. Husiti hrad rozšírili o prvé predhradie s dvojicou protiľahlých vstupných brán. Stred južnej hradby zabezpečili päťbokou baštou, ktorá je prvou replikou táborského typu veží na Slovensku, ktorá je aj historicky doložená ako husitská stavba. Hrad sa dostal naspäť k pôvodným majiteľom len nakrátko, pretože hrad obsadili žoldnieri Jána Jiskru. Za bojov s Jánom Hunyadym bol hrad v roku 1446 dobytý a vypálený.

Potom hrad vlastnili rôzne šľachtické rody, napr. Országhovci, Lošonciovci a Balašovci. Medzitým, v 2. polovici 16. storočia, bolo na východnej starne vybudované druhé predhradie v tvare pretiahnutého oválu, o čo sa zaslúžil Štefan Balaša. Táto jeho stavebná aktivita bola súčasťou protitureckých vojenských opatrení.

Roku 1595 hrad získali Forgáchovci a boli jeho majiteľmi až do začiatku 18. storočia. Počas stavovských protihabsburských povstaní uhorskej šľachty v roku 1644, v 80. rokoch 17. storočia a na začiatku 18. storočia bol hrad viac ráz poškodený a opätovne opravovaný. Forgáchovci v 17. storočí hrad renesančne prestavali, horný hrad rozšírili o nové obytné a hospodárske budovy. Po porážke povstania Františka II. Rákocziho kráľovská komora skonfiškovala Šimonovi Forgáchovi poškodený hrad a celé Topoľčianske panstvo. Odvtedy zostal hrad opustený a pomaly pustol.

Poslednými majiteľmi hradu boli Stummerovci, ktorí sa v polovici 18. storočia presťahovali do reprezentačného priestranného kaštieľa v Tovarníkoch. Na prelome 19. a 20. storočia rozpadávajúci sa hrad nechali čiastočne zakonzervovať a romanticky ho upravili. Vežu dostavali dvoma stupňovitými štítmi, čím získala svoju neopakovateľnú charakteristickú siluetu.

Z veže, na ktorú je možné vystúpiť aj dnes, je prekrásny výhľad do údolia rieky Nitry, na hrebene Tríbeča a Vtáčnika, ako aj Považského Inovca.
