Cirkevné stavby reflektovali svoju dobu. Boli obrazom christianizácie, reformácie i protireformácie, súčasťou spoločenských udalostí, korunovácii, pohrebov, ich búranie a výstavba odzrkadľovali potreby mesta a jeho obyvateľov. Pri kostoloch vznikali na začiatku archívy, školy a školské budovy.
